What problems would a cell have if it couldn't control what went out or came in?

It could have a large affect on the cell if there wasn't some sort of control on what was allowed to pass in and out of the cell. In action potentials you could have too much sodium going into the cell causing a continuous firing of say, muscle cells causing a constant contraction of the muscle. Or, you could have too much potassium going out, not allowing for a potential to pass and this would cause the muscle to stay limp. Neurotransmitters and many other things are also regulated by channels, gates, and receptors on cell walls. Each one of these could alter cells and their actions. What problems would a cell have if it couldn't control what went out or came in?
It would die. If too much water or any liquid came in, then the cell would explode. If too much water flowed out, the cell would shrink up. If a cell couldn't get rid of wastes, it would die because the wastes would accumulate to toxic levels. If it couldn't bring in glucose it would starve to death. Finally, if the cell couldn't bring ions and other molecules in then it wouldn't be able to carry out its necessary functions to survive. What problems would a cell have if it couldn't control what went out or came in?
lots of problems.

A cell needs to regulate its environment adequately. A small error in achieving homeostasis can have a multitude of symptoms. One disease that immediately springs to mind is Cystic Fibrosis. It is amazing how a single mutation in the transporter located in the cell membrane can have such disastrous effects.
