Can I start birth control pills a few days prior to having my period to postpone it?

I am 24 and have a prescription for birth control pills but I have not started it. I am going away for memorial weekend and expect my period in the next five days. Can I start taking my RX (which is Ortho Lo) and skip this months period? Will I have break through bleeding or spotting?

*Please, only respond if you're knowledgeable about this type of medication and its uses or if you have had experience in this matter. I am not interested in guesses or uneducated opinions.*Can I start birth control pills a few days prior to having my period to postpone it?
35 years old, 16 years of birth control.

Doing that will not guarantee you will not have your period. Sometimes doing that will end up having your period for longer than what you'd like!

Just take it when the doctor said to take it and wear a tampon. Can I start birth control pills a few days prior to having my period to postpone it?
You can try to skip your period (some people skip the placebo pills for 3 months or more while taking birth control to avoid having their period), however it's very possible that you will have bleeding anyway. I have tried in the past to skip the placebo pills and start a pack early and it didn't work -- it postponed my period for a couple days and then it unexpectedly started and it then was difficult to get back on track.

You can talk to your doctor for more advice on this matter - but if you do try it, just know that it's not a guarantee you will be able to skip your period.
My doctor told me after she prescribed the pill to me to wait until I started my period to take them cause they would do no effect specially if you're so close to getting it. You already ovulated and the idea of getting your period is to discharge the unfertilized egg.

So most likely it will not work and you would have wasted a pack. Just be safe and start the day your next period starts, after you are on the pill you will be able to skip periods by not taking the sugar pills and starting a new pack but some spotting might occur.
No, you'll most likely still have a completely normal period.

You would, however, be able to skip next months (though it's very likely to have breakthrough bleeding... I'm never able to completely skip mine without some spotting)

With only a few days on the Birth Control, your body won't be adjusted enough to regulate your cycle... to completely regulate your cycle typically takes about three months or so. But, it's always worth a shot. Just bring some pads or tampons in case it doesnt work!
You can, and it will probably stop this months, but if youre hoping to postpone it to have sex, its not worth it. The pill needs to build up in your system, so having sex in the first week is probably not a good idea.

I always start mine the day after my period ends, so I dont get pregnant and I know that I'll be on time next month.

I suggest that you do the same. Have a good weekend though, and ask again if you have more Ortho Lo questions!
NO you can not. You can try but most likely it will not be effective. Ortho tryciclin has a low graduated dose of hormones. You can only skip a period on a monophasic pill
You can try by taking your RX now, but there's no guarantee that you'll skip this month's period. Breakthrough bleeding is pretty likely, given that you haven't been taking BC before now.
You cannot skip this months period because of birth control, you have to take it the sunday you get your period so that way it aviods getting it on weekends
no....you have to start the first pill in the pack the first day of your period......you cant just start it whenever you feel like it....iam on loestrin fe...i doubt its any different...
It's possible that it would work at least partially, but it is unlikely that you would get away without any spotting.

The normal cause of a period or period-like bleeding (technically, it's not a period when BC is involved) is the same: A drop in hormone levels. Hormones are what sustain the uterine lining to keep you from bleeding. When hormones drop too far, you will start spotting. When they drop a little further, outright bleeding begins.

The hormones that your body is producing naturally right before your period and the hormones found in your BC are slightly different. There will be something of a mini-war going on between two different hormones of your body and the BC as the BC's hormones take over control. It's not necessarily a cleanly fought battle, and your hormones may fizzle out before your body has completely adopted the BC. This may result in hormone dives, which in turn may cause spotting or bleeding.

It's probably worth trying, anyway. Just realize you won't be fully protected for intercourse right away. One thing to consider, either direction: Your cycles can get delayed by all kinds of unexpected things. Mebbe your period won't happen then anyway. Maybe it will a week later, or maybe tomorrow.

If you do start the Ortho now, and if you do make it through your travel weekend without spotting (hopefully you can), you're still not out of the woods. Uterine lining can only be built up to a certain maximum point (different from one woman to another or one time to another). Taking the pills at this point will extend your cycle by 3 more weeks. Your lining may be able to hold itself together that much longer, or it may not. If it can't, you'll still see some breakthrough bleeding before you reach the sugar pills.

Good luck, whatever you decide.
